Easter Song

  1. Easter Song -:-- / -:--

Easter Song by Annie Herring, and first recorded by the group The Second Chapter of Acts in 1974 on the Myrrh label. It was named by CCM magazine in 1998 as the No. 4 Christian song of all time.

Mr. Wiki Pedia writes: “The 2nd Chapter of Acts was a Jesus music and early contemporary Christian music group composed of sisters Annie Herring and Nelly Greisen and brother Matthew Ward. They began performing in 1973 and enjoyed their period of greatest success during the 1970s. The group disbanded in 1988.”

This arrangement for Soloist & Choir by BT 1978.

This recording was made in early 1979. I set a cassette deck running  to see how the newly formed 6.30pm Service choir sounded. In late 1978 I was given permission by the Church Council to form a new choir for the evening service in addition to the 11am choir. The idea was to try out a broader and more contemporary range of repertoire. So for a handful of people his recording is a historical archive, though it  was never intended for release and is far from perfect. The GNU decided in early 1979 that arranging other people’s material was too much of a faff and legal hassle and that it was far less trouble to produce our own material. Thank you Jayne Hannah [the soloist] wherever you are. I know you weren’t feeling particularly well that day. I don’t think you even knew you were being recorded! And thank you to Dougie Nowell, organist and bass player extraordinaire who helped kick start the creative era, even though he was having a bad day with B flats on this occasion. It was a beginning,…..judge for yourselves.

Please do not sue me for releasing this. But that new choir really grabbed the attention of a Religious Programmes producer who came booked us for our first BBC Broadcast in December 1979.
